Redhillarchives isn’t looking for content. We’re looking for the essay, the painting, or the idea you’ve been sitting on because it didn’t fit anywhere else.
We publish across culture, art, and opinion — writing that thinks in layers, not soundbites. If you’ve got something to say and you’re willing to say it properly, we want to read it.
What We’re Looking For
• Essays and long-form commentary — cultural criticism, personal essays with a clear argument, pieces that connect a small observation to something bigger
• Visual art and process work — paintings, illustrations, or mixed media with a point of view, especially work that plays with binary/monochrome themes or responds to a concept, phrase, or maxim
• Opinion pieces — sharp, well-reasoned takes on culture, society, or the everyday decisions that quietly define us
• Hybrid work — writing paired with visual art, or art with a written statement behind it
We’re less interested in listicles, generic “how-to” content, or anything that reads like it was written to hit a word count.
Tone Guide
Redhillarchives has an editorial, slightly literary register — think a magazine that assumes its reader is smart, not a blog optimised for skimming.
• Write like you’re arguing a point, not reporting one
• Short sentences are fine; short thinking isn’t
• Avoid corporate or self-help language (“unlock your potential,” “in today’s fast-paced world”)
• Specificity over vagueness — a real detail beats a broad claim every time
• It’s fine to be personal, but the piece should still be about something beyond the personal
If you’re unsure whether your piece fits, read a recent essay on the site first — the voice should feel like a natural extension of it, not a departure.
Submission Format
• Essays/opinion: 600–1,500 words, submitted as a Google Doc or plain text file
• Art submissions: high-resolution images (JPEG or PNG, at least 1500px on the longest side), plus a short artist statement (100–200 words) explaining the concept or process
• Hybrid pieces: submit both components together, clearly labelled
Please include:
1. A one-line pitch or summary
2. The full piece (or portfolio, for art)
3. A short bio (1–2 sentences) for byline purposes
How to Submit

We read everything. If it’s a fit, we’ll follow up within [insert timeframe, e.g. 2–3 weeks]. If we don’t get back to you in that window, feel free to check in.
A Note on Rights
By submitting, you retain ownership of your work. We’ll agree on usage terms (exclusive/non-exclusive, byline credit, any compensation) before anything is published.
